課程概述 |
This course provides a holistic approach to the translation practice. We will focus on practical training in translation from English to Chinese. This practical training will be informed by relevant theories and useful skill and knowledge in translation practice that are essential for novice translators. Students are encouraged to think critically and analytically about different issues and difficulties rising in the translation process, envisage their individual role as a translator, and develop their decision-making ability to deal with potential translation problems and come up with solutions. While facilitated by lecturer-guidance and comment, this course is highly student-centred which requires students’ proactive participation in their learning process through various in-class activities, including self-critique, peer-review and oral presentations. |
課程目標 |
To develop awareness of translation problems when translating from Chinese into English;
To understand the similarity and disparity of cultural mind-set and linguistic structure between Chinese and English;
To develop decision-making and problem-solving skills during the translation process; be able to acquire useful revision and editing skills of Chinese output;
To understand that the translation rendered should be a final product that is the result of careful thought and thorough discussion. |
課程要求 |
Students should:
Understand that assignments generated or edited by machine translation tools will result into an automatic FAIL
Complete and submit the weekly or fortnightly assignments (translation and revision) for the purpose of peer review and in-class discussion at least THREE days before class (see instructions in class)
Present and discuss their translation commentaries and peer-review in the first part of classes
Understand that any unjustified absence and late submission or absence of assignments for up to two times may result in a ZERO of the entire assessment
Not submit any overdue coursework/assignments without any prior discussion/negotiation with the course coordinator; in general, an extension will only be granted for serious circumstances that require compassionate consideration, such as sudden serious illness, loss of family, or a car accident
NOT expect spoon-fed teaching from the lecturer
Be proactively participating in their own learning process, both in and after class, including (in-class) translation practice, self-critic, peer-review as well as mini presentation on a regular basis
Be able to work individually on and responsible for their coursework, including paying attention to details when writing assignments and punctual submission of any types, either through e-mail or in hard-copy
Be good team players when pair/teamwork is required
Use NTU e-mail as the channel of the first point of contact
Discuss with the lecturer with regard to their learning process at any time during the semester
*The final version is to be announced at the beginning of the semester.
*The class content and schedule may change according to students’ learning needs, learning processes and/or learning speeds. |
